The Brooklyn Academy of Music has collated an impressive, erudite collection of films of varying brow heights that, in some way, draw inspiration from "Vertigo." Put together by C. Mason Wells in collaboration with BAMcinematek's Nellie Killian and David Reilly, the series refracts Alfred Hitchc*ck's kaleidoscopic masterpiece through seven decades of world cinema, examining its vast ...

‘Hand to God’ Theater Review: Humans Are Here Simply to Service Their Puppets

Posted 2 weeks ago

As scenarios go, the one about the dummy that takes over the life of the ventriloquist is nearly foolproof. My favorite variation is the old “Alfred Hitchc*ck Presents” episode in which the ventriloquist is revealed to be a life-size doll and the dummy turns out to be a midget.
In Robert Askins’ new play “Hand to God,” which had its Broadway premiere Tuesday at the ...

Posted 4 weeks ago
I have seen Nazi concentration camp footage before: the gas chambers, the burlap bags of hair, the cadavers piled in a pit.

But what I saw this weekend, in rare footage screened at the Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival in Greece, was shocking beyond measure. Not even the Greek sun could alleviate the pain. André Singer's documentary Night Will Fall features the footage of ...
